How to Become a Champion

When people who have traveled or lived in an underdeveloped area come across a local group which is doing exceptional work, they can become “Champions” for that project.  A Champion is the crucial link that connects the local grassroots organization with One World’s fundraising network and support.

Champions are responsible for fundraising for their project and for keeping close personal contact with it. They, more than any other person on the planet, have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the benefits of their fundraising efforts.

Step 1

To become a Champion, contact One World to discuss the opportunity or project you would like to support.

What we look for in a project or group:

  • Does it primarily serve underprivileged children and their caregivers?
  • Is the project is run by local people?
  • Does it maintain a low overhead?
  • Is it a registered NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) in its own country, with a transparent financial structure?

    Step 2

Once we’ve spoken with you, we will invite you to one of our champion orientation meetings (held quarterly).  If, after attending (in person, by Skype, or by phone) you wish to continue the process, you will be invited to fill out a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) to submit to One World.

The LOI asks for information about you, your motivation, commitment to the mission of the project, and basic information about the project you wish to champion.

    Step 3

After reviewing the LOI, One World’s Projects Committee will invite you to an interview.  At the interview, we will explore your project more fully, and introduce you to the benefits and people who make up One World.  The interview provides you an opportunity to understand the commitments you are making to your project and to One World and what One World’s commitments are in return.

What we look for in a Champion:

      • A willingness to tailor their philanthropy to the needs and priorities of the grassroots group they are serving
      • A clear commitment to advance that group’s mission

      Next Steps

After reviewing the LOI and the interview, the Committee votes whether to move the application onto the next steps:

      • A Project Application Form and due diligence information is completed by the grassroots project and submitted to One World for review.
      • Once all the materials are evaluated, the OWCF Board of Directors votes to approve the partnership.
      • Upon approval, the Champion, the Project and One World sign agreements which outline the scope of the work.

It is anticipated that a Champion will be willing to commit to a partnership for at least three years.
