Drug prevention is another important program area which One World strongly feels about. Although many young people experiment with drugs without the intention of continuing, and some are coerced into using drugs by traffickers, pimps, and gang leaders, the powerful chemical effects of drugs can easily lead to addiction, brain damage, uninhibited social control, and other risky behaviors. Injection drug users are also at higher risk for acquiring HIV and hepatitis C. Drug use is additionally related to gang involvement and violence, a major killer of young males. This highlights the need to prevent drug use from a young age and also the need to rehabilitate drug users.
One World supports grassroots projects that provide children and young adults with healthier alternatives so they can excel in school, form healthy relationships, and live a life free from drug dependency.
