The HIV/AIDS epidemic has a huge physical, mental, social, and economic toll on children. Each day, more than 1,000 children are newly infected by HIV and more than half of them will die from AIDS due to lack of treatment. Meanwhile, more than 16 million children under the age of 18 have lost one or both parents to AIDS. Not only do these children lose an important source of social support but they also lose economic support from healthy, productive caregivers. Faced with stigma, poverty and malnutrition, some children drop out of school to care for sick family members or to seek employment. When left to fend for themselves, some children may become victims of sex trafficking or enter into forced marriages that increases risk of HIV transmission.
To address the many factors surrounding HIV/AIDS, One World supports grassroots organizations in providing HIV testing and treatment, health education to reduce high risk behaviors, antiretroviral drugs to reduce mother-to-child transmission, income-generating projects for HIV affected households, and comprehensive support for HIV orphans.
