“A sustainable community manages its human, natural, and financial resources to meet current needs while ensuring that adequate resources are equitably available for future generations.” - Institute for Sustainable Communities
Children are central to sustainable communities, they are the link between current and future generations. As today's children grow up, they will need to deal with the challenges of the coming decades – notably climate change, which will hit communities in developing countries hardest. Small farmers are likely to face more frequent and serious floods and droughts, while the urban poor will need to cope with increasing food shortages.
One World Children's Fund believes it is important to develop the capacity and resilience of children and their communities to face these challenges. One World projects are empowering children as global citizens and as agents of change in their communities. They are getting involved in local community service, learning vocational and livelihood skills, and building links with other young people around the world to tackle the issues of tomorrow.
