Hlomelikusasa

Eastern Cape, South Africa

Hlomelikusasa mitigates the impact of HIV/AIDS on orphans and vulnerable children in the rural areas of the former Transkei. This community-based organization and their network of women extend sustainable care to orphans and vulnerable children through school uniforms, nutrition, medical and emotional support. By strengthening the extended family and support structures through community based intervention, Hlomelikusasa is able to support the children.

The 15 drop-in centers are a safe haven, run by village women who have been trained in child care, permaculture gardening,home-based care and treatment literacy for HIV/AIDS.  330 orphans and vulnerable children come after school for a nutritious meal supplemented by fresh, organic vegetables.
