This summer, we invited Kyaninga Child Development Center (KCDC, pictured) to join our membership network. KCDC was founded in 2014 as a community-focused child therapy center in Western Uganda. When Asha Williams gave birth to a young son with a disability, she and her husband Steve discovered that they would have to travel out of the country to access therapy. Recognizing that many other families in their community were facing similar challenges, Steve and Asha founded KCDC. KCDC provides 2,000 children per year with therapy and inclusive schooling. They also provide technical training and economic empowerment to caregivers, so they can help their children thrive.

When speaking with Steve about why he sought to work with One World, he said he appreciates One World’s values, our focus on children, our commitment to building deep relationships with grassroots organizations, and our thorough vetting process.

In the process of vetting KCDC, we spoke with organizational leaders and community members, including the mother of a child who attends school at KCDC. She shared that her young daughter could not sit or eat on her own before, and that KCDC is adding independence and joy to her daughter's life. KCDC’s Board Chair shared that it was inspiring to have the opportunity to answer “thoughtful” questions and be recognized as a leader of the organization through the vetting process.

With fiscal sponsorship from One World, KCDC will benefit from the ability to receive tax exempt donations from the United States, increased visibility to potential philanthropic partners, an online donations platform, donation reporting, support with donor relations, and donor confidence supported by One World’s vetting and monitoring processes.

KCDC will also benefit from One World’s coaching, mentorship matching, facilitated collaborative peer learning groups, and on-demand training programs. They are eager to use our transition planning trainings to ensure their organization remains a source of education and support for disabled children in their community for many years to come. By enrolling staff and board members, they can build deep organizational knowledge across all levels.

One World is helping amplify the impact of KCDC and other grassroots organizations. As a community, we can work together to build strong, sustainable grassroots organizations that give children in under-resourced communities the assistance they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
